Beverly Pepper Messenger Series

Beverly Pepper (1924–2020, b. Brooklyn, NY) created four columnar pieces, Interrupted Messenger, Measured Presence, Valleyed Marker, and Volatile Presence. The large-scale pieces are part of Pepper’s recent Messenger Series, which has been described in terms of its physical poetry. The works in the series are distinguished by their tall, threaded spindles, which reach skyward in a profoundly serene statement. They are delicate obelisks in the muted tones and subtle textures of found objects.

All four pieces were cast from ductile iron by Malleable Metals, a foundry in Bethany, CT, and weigh between 3,500 and 3,800 pounds each. The tallest of this quartet in malleable metal is Interrupted Messenger, which towers 29 feet above the ground. The others range from 24 to 27 feet, and they are staged in a random grouping designed for maximum visual impact and symmetry.
