David Wells Megagleaners on Field of Storefront Blue Chairs

City Hall Park
October 24, 1981 - April 24, 1982

About the Exhibition

David Wells’ Megagleaners on Field of Storefront Blue Chairs consists of 13 brightly painted plywood figures and 20 readymade blue chairs. The figures, suggestive of Millet’s harvesting women, are appropriate occupants for City Hall Park.

The Megagleaners were first installed on the Oberlin College green in spring 1981, where they became a focal point for the entire community. In New York City, variations on the figures have appeared throughout the city for the past several years and have undergone various transformations to suit each environment. Recently, during the excavation of a vacant lot in front of his house, Wells adorned the fence tops with some of these figures.
