Brookie Maxwell 42nd Street: A Walk Across

Port Authority
February 26 - May 26, 1985

About the Exhibition

The 42nd Street: A Walk Across diorama, created by New York City artist Brookie Maxwell (1956–2015, b. Manhattan, NY), offers a tour of 42nd Street from river to river. Each of the 12 sections depicts a block at a different hour of the day and during each month of the year. The views show how First Avenue appears at 9 am in January and continues in sequence ending with Eleventh Avenue at 9 pm in December.

The circular diorama is constructed of clay, plaster, wood, and acrylic. Each of the 12 sections, measuring more than a foot high and more than three feet wide, is lighted.
