Public Art Fund Picnic: Celebrating Harold Ancart’s Subliminal Standard

Join us to celebrate Harold Ancart and the opening of his new work Subliminal Standard, a large-scale immersive painted concrete artwork inspired by New York City’s handball courts. We’ll have free Melt ice cream sandwiches (while they last!), handball giveaways, art making activities led by teaching artists from the Children’s Museum of the Arts, and introductions to the artwork by the exhibition curator Daniel S. Palmer every 30 minutes.

On May 1, Public Art Fund will unveil Subliminal Standard, an interactive new commission by Brooklyn-based, Belgian-born artist Harold Ancart. He has constructed a large scale painted concrete sculpture inspired by New York City’s ubiquitous handball courts, which have fascinated him for years because of their unexpected relationship to the history of abstraction. The painting will reference the traditional boundary lines of the court and the inadvertent abstract compositions created when city courts are repaired and repainted to mask graffiti and weathering over time. Popularized by early 20th century immigrants to the United States, handball is among the most democratic sports, requiring nothing more than a small ball and a wall to play. Harold Ancart: Subliminal Standard will be open and accessible to the public May 1, 2019 – March 1, 2020 at the north end of Cadman Plaza Park in Downtown Brooklyn.
