Tony Cragg Turbo and Ferryman

Turbo and Ferryman by Tony Cragg (b. 1949, Liverpool, England) make their US debut at Doris C. Freedman Plaza (Fifth Avenue at 60th Street). These sculptures highlight Cragg’s continued focus on organic forms and formal sculptural practices. Turbo, the taller of the two, measures six-and-a-half feet tall and is composed of a series of four irregular bronze discs stacked one on top of the other. Like a spinning top, the spherical form creates a sense of motion where the work seemingly shifts from left to right, shrinking and expanding from top to bottom. Ferryman, a more organic sculpture, measures four feet high and eight feet long. Unlike the geometric Turbo, Ferryman was developed out of a series of waves and mounds. Ferryman‘s imposing size amplifies and contradicts its lacy bronze frame.

These works were first shown together in the courtyard of the Royal Academy of Arts, London, in 1999.
