Linda Howard Maya

Maya by Linda Howard (b. 1934, Evanston, IL) is a 1,000-pound brushed-aluminum sculpture, and is the second contemporary work of art to be placed in City Hall Park as part of a continuing outdoor exhibition program initiated by the Public Arts Council in the spring of 1978. It also is the first piece of art by a woman artist in this historic place and is Howard’s first outdoor display in New York City.

Maya, an Eastern philosophical word meaning “inner force,” is 16.5’ x 9.5’ x 5’ and an outstanding example of the artist’s trademark: “paradox and opposites . . . which transform solid matter into spiritual energy.” Of her work, which as been exhibited in collections and museums throughout the nation, Howard has noted, “forms change slowly, dissolve, and evolve into their opposites.”

The sculpture is a commission for the upcoming 13th Olympic Winter Games at Lake Placid, New York.
