Nobi Shioya: Newton and Darwin

About the Exhibition

Las Meninas is a series of nineteen bronze sculptures by Nobi Shioya (b.1958, Albany, NY) created for PS 166 in Manhattan. Shioya created the pieces, which are situated around the school, as objects meant to be touched in order to make them accessible to the viewers. The sculptures range from a two-inch snail to a thirty-six-inch dog. The title piece, Las Meninas, was inspired by the 1656 painting of the same title by Diego Velazquez. Other creatures in the series include a bison, a salamander, a gorilla, a fish, an elephant, and a bird, as well as conceptual, geometric pieces.
