Yellow Ascending

About the Exhibition

Yellow Ascending by George Sugarman (1912-1999, b. New York City, NY) is a 12,000 pound, 25’ x 23’ yellow, steel sculpture constructed of six prefabricated welded steel elements. Noting that Yellow Ascending is the first contemporary work of art to be placed in City Hall Park, Doris C. Freedman, President of the Public Art Fund, declared Yellow Ascending an outstanding example of the richness of talent that exists in our city. “The Public Arts Council has been working with the city on a new program of changing exhibitions in a series of selected sites throughout the five boroughs. The Sugarman sculpture initiates this program. In the future it is anticipated that artists will be given the opportunity to create works for exhibition in these specific sites.”
