Tom Otterness Life Underground

Now on view at 14th Street/8th Ave MTA Station
Originally presented at Doris C. Freedman Plaza
On Permanent View — Installed November 01, 1995

About the Exhibition

Life Underground by Tom Otterness (b. 1952, Wichita, KS) will spend one year at Doris C. Freedman Plaza before it makes its permanent home in one of the most familiar spots to New Yorkers, the New York City subway system. As you cross Fifth Avenue heading towards the park, you may feel as if you have entered Alice’s Wonderland. A bronze alligator with jaws clamped around Mr. Moneybags drags the figure underground, as two miniature police men nearby sweep up a pile of loose change. With eight sculptures in total, Tom Otterness’ work creates the image of another world in the 14th Street A/C/E/L subway station.
