Faith Ringgold Banner of Joyful Mysteries

The Studio Museum in Harlem
August 12 - August 19, 1984

About the Exhibition

Faith Ringgold (1930–2024, b. New York City, NY) created a banner, which is installed in the vacant lot adjacent to the Studio Museum in Harlem during a week of events at the museum. The main event is the burial of seven bronze time capsules made by artist Houston Conwill, each bearing the wish of a great philosopher, historian, or artist. The children who witness the burial will dig up the capsules in fifty years. Charles Shorter, chairman of the board of the Studio Museum in Harlem, said “This is for future generations; this is the permanency of black people in Harlem.”
