About the Exhibition

Barbara Kruger’s work consists of a series of three stylized portraits of American males. The accompanying text reveals a scenario where both men and women are capable of conceiving and delivering children. By challenging a basic premise of childbearing, Kruger (b.1945, Newark, NJ) raises relevant questions on the issue of reproductive rights: How would this sharing of procreative capabilities change how we view the joys and labors of childbearing? How would it alter who has power over whose body? Kruger adds, “In this series of pictures and words I am attempting to raise questions, but to try and do so with humor and a kind of quietly bemused consideration. Hopefully this work can help focus attention on our dreams and who can dare to dream them, and our bodies and who controls them.”
