About the Exhibition
Pierre Clerk’s site-specific sculptures consist of bulky geometric forms and massive sections of curves joined together with straight pieces, and painted in black-and-white stripes. Clerk (b.1928, Atlanta, GA) expanded his two-dimensional painted imagery into these massive geometric sculptures and constructed the works on site at Waterside Plaza. This involvement in the public space in which his works were displayed invited the Waterside community to witness the creation of these pieces and allowed for a greater understanding and appreciation of the works.
The exhibition of Clerk’s sculptures at Waterside is sponsored by the Public Arts Council of the Municipal Art Society and is a project of the Public Art Fund, Inc. an organization that explores, develops and creates opportunities to bring art directly into the public environment. At Waterside, this would not have been accomplished without the cooperation of the architects, tenants, and management. The understanding, patience and encouragement of all, particularly Stuart Shatken, Vice President of Dwelling Managers, Inc., Al Harmon, Director of Management for Waterside, and Lewis Davis of Davis/Brody & Associates, provided the support needed for the realization of this exhibition. This project is an excellent example of how the planning of our built environment can be creatively expanded by including the artist in the planning process.
