About the Exhibition
This exhibition of Betty Klavun’s Play Sculpture emphasizes a form of community interaction with sculpture. Klavun (1914-1986) says she likes “designing fantasy constructions with children in mind. An imaginary life, or Time to pretend, plays a necessary part in a child’s recognition of its future identity. As adults we cannot help but appreciate a child’s imagination as a marvelously creative, often original experience in itself. But, in spite of ourselves, we blow too many whistles, our boundaries are too insistent and, because we know our Time is short, we hustle our children into group thinking and behavior. In protest I enjoy creating environments to suggest adventure and romance, or improvised games with or without competition, or just an odd corner for privacy and dreams.”
