Michelle Lopez
Woadsonner

car, leather
MetroTech Center, Brooklyn
October 2000 through September 2001

Michelle Lopez's unusual artwork is highly refined and deceptively simple. Her sculptures are made of a combination of two materials -- buckskin leather and large discarded machines -- and the odd pairing of these materials yields arrestingly beautiful forms. Lopez swathes disused vehicle chassis in lush beige leather. By working leather with water and oils, this luxurious material soon becomes a soft second skin for the shells of old sports cars.

For MetroTech, Lopez covers a small sports car in beige leather and presents it on a specially lit pedestal, as if it were a sleek new car model displayed at a car show. The image of the car combined with leather, both luxury goods, stand for desire and sensuality. Although familiar in form, Lopez's Woadsonner explores human desire and admiration that is embedded within popular culture through her unusual pairing of leather and sports cars.
