panel addressed the intellectual and cultural issues confronting
international curators in the arena of present-day Europe, the significance
today of an international exhibition in Europe and what artistic
and cultural currents define a European community for the contemporary

Biographies Francesco Bonami is Manilow Senior Curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and artistic director of the Fondazione Sandretto ReRebaudengo per L'Arte. He was the U.S. editor of Flash Art International from 1990 to 1997 and has lectured and published widely on the contemporary visual arts. Maria Hlavajova is director of the Soros Center for Contemporary Arts-Bratislava, Slovakia. She has curated numerous one-person and group exhibitions, particularly of contemporary Czech and Slovakian artists, and is a contributor to PROFIL, Atelier, Kalligram, and Siksi: The Nordic Art Review. Paolo
Colombo is director of the Centre d'Art Contemporain, Geneva, where
he has curated exhibitions of Kiki Smith, Anne Sauser-Hall, Allan
McCollum, Nicos Baikas, Silvia Bachli, Pia Stadtbäumer, Ugo
Rondinone, Pipilotti Rist, Jane and Louise Wilson, Gilian Wearing,
and many other artists.
